STAR Program Launched!

West Prince Chamber of Commerce Tammy Rix Executive Director takes along Sean D’Amato & Katey Culleton from the STAR (Start to Apply Right), on her travels to the Tignish Business Community to round up more Chamber memberships. Tammy feels youth can benefit from mentoring and learning exactly what it is she does. Sean & Katey also had the opportunity to explain to people about the Canada Learning Bond; $ 500 offered by the Government of Canada to help you start saving now for your child’s or grandchild’s education after high school. Your child could also get $ 100 every year until age 15. In total, a child could receive up to $ 2000 in RESP contributions.

STAR is about teaching youth how to manage money, budgeting, interest savings and loans, credit, insurance, careers and life skills dealing with anxiety, communication team building etc.

Tammy was asked by Chris Shaw coordinator of the STAR program to chat with participants and tell them what the West Prince Chamber does. How it can be a voice for the Business Community when it comes to Government policy or issues, connecting people and businesses alike. The Chamber works to nurture ideas and grow business for the West Prince region. Tammy is looking forward to the Chamber’s first Business Mixer, GREET & GROW planned for Wednesday, September 5 at Holland College building in Alberton from 7-9 pm. Anyone who is not a member but would like to participate is also welcome.

STAR is a program funded through Skills PEI, partnering with the West Prince Chamber of Commerce, to give YOUTH an opportunity to gain life skills and work experience that will support their successful transition from high school to post secondary education, apprenticeship, the workforce, or future entrepreneurship. Tammy hope’s participant’s of the Star program will even think about a future in business, and the benefits of being self-employed, and remain in the West Prince Community. Youth are our future so it’s up to us to give them great opportunities that West Prince has to offer.
